How is oil shale formed

Shale oil is a high-quality crude oil that lies between layers of shale rock, impermeable mudstone, or siltstone. Oil companies produce shale oil by fracturing the layers of rock that contain the layers of oil. Don't confuse shale oil with oil shale. That is rock suffused with kerogen, a precursor to oil. Oil shale is an organic-rich fine-grained sedimentary rock containing kerogen (a solid mixture of organic chemical compounds) from which liquid hydrocarbons can be produced, called shale oil (not to be confused with tight oil—crude oil occurring naturally in shales). Think of oil shale like liquid crude oil that made it through every stage of development, save the last part that converted it into a liquid. It's up to energy scientists to finish the process. Oil shale is essentially rock that contains solid bits of kerogen, a precursor to oil.
